Jannah Virginia Boruff Hicks of Englewood, died Monday, April 18, 2016. She was 84.
Jannah was a lifelong resident of McMinn County. She was the youngest daughter born to Pearl Sloan Boruff and Denham Boruff of Sweetwater, TN. She attended Sweetwater High School and is a graduate of Tennessee Technical Institute, Wesleyan University and University of Tennessee where she received her Masters degree in Education.
Teaching and mentoring was Jannah’s passion. She taught at Englewood Elementary and Mountain View Elementary Schools and was a kindergarten teacher at First Baptist Church in Englewood.
Jannah was recently preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Doyle Grady Hicks. She is also preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and brother. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Cynthia Hicks and Rolff Zwiep of Nashville, and Donna Hicks and Gary Wilson of Englewood; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Sue Hicks and their son, Dino Hicks; grandsons Tyler and Dylan Zwiep of Nashville; many beloved nieces, nephew, students, fellow teachers and dear friends.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:30 PM followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3 PM on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Smith Funeral Home in Athens, TN.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Jannah’s honor to Habitat for Humanity, The Carter Center, and Doctors Without Borders.
