Margaret Francis Downey, 84, of Athens, died Friday morning at NHC of Athens.
She was a native of Murfreesboro, TN and a long time resident of Smith County, TN and McMinn County since 2004. She was a daughter of the late Fred G. and Tibbie Travis Francis. She was also preceded in death by her husband William "Bill" Henry Downey and a son Donnie McCullough.
She was a member of Mt. Harmony Church in Niota. She worked for many years with Smith County Motors as a bookkeeper and with the Swift Museum in Athens until her retirement.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Debby and David McClanahan of Wears Valley,TN, Missy and Jason Wolford of Athens,TN, Connie and Michael Zalabak of Niota,TN and Melanie and Charles Spires of Cleveland, TN; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Danny and Lisa McCullough of Mountain Home, ID, Mark Downey of Mosheim,TN and David McCullough of LaCrosse, WI; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four sisters; Jo Gooch of Woodbury,TN, Evelyn Brite of Cisco, TX, Sue Knight of Granbury, TX, Mary Williams of Del Rio, TX; and one brother Burr and Mary Francis of Smyrna,TN; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 am, Monday, March 20, 2017 at Mt. Harmony Cemetery with Rev. Stanley Hammonds officiating. The family will receive friends from 3-5 pm, Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Smith Funeral Home.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made in honor of Margaret to the American Heart Association, 519 E. 4th Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403.
