Jack William Slayton,Jr. 68, of Niota, died Monday morning, May 8, 2017, at Sweetwater Hospital.
He was born in Phenix City, Alabama and was a lifelong resident of McMinn County, and was a son of the late Jack William Slayton, Sr. and Marjorie Ann Garner Ritter, he was also preceded in death by a brother Stephen Slayton.
Jack was a member of Englewood Church of God. He was the Sports Editor for the Daily Post Athenian semi-retiring in 2015, but he continued to cover McMinn Central High and Tennessee Wesleyan University sports.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Bobbie H. Slayton of Niota; one daughter and son-in-law, Jacque and Jerimy Widener of Nashville; one son, Keith Slayton of Cookeville; his step-children, Kenny and Diane Bridges of Niota and Kellie and Tamara Bowles of Knoxville; his grandchildren, Lucas Keith Alsobrook, William Marcus Blake Peeler, Jordyn Makel Peeler, Shayden Bridges; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Kaye Slayton of Snellville, GA; one sister-in-law and her husband, Wava and Charlie Robbins of Maryville; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted, 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Englewood Church of God with Pastor Scott Cardin officiating. Entombment will be held, 11 am on Friday at McMinn Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Fati King, Johnny Coffman, Blake Peeler, Johnny Morgan, Doug Armstrong, Mike Poe, Stan Harrison and Gabriel Garcia. Honorary pallbearers will be John Slayton, Keith Slayton, Mark Peeler, Doug Headrick, Scott Power and Andy Brusseau.
