John Wesley Jones, 77, of Athens, died early Thursday morning, June 15, 2017 at NHC of Athens.
He was a native of Bradley County and was a son of the late Dorph Lee Ander and Mary Lou Emmer Woody Jones. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Louella Mitchell, Lydia Earwood, Lillie Lewis, Margie Jones, Clara B. Jones, Mary Ann Sweatman, Cora Lee Blackwell, a brother, Ray Jones and a grandson, Aaron Matthews.
He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he served as an Usher. He was an avid bowler. John was retired as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Army, having served in the U.S. Army for 16 years, the U.S. Air Force for 4 years and the National Guard for 3 years, he received many awards and accommodations while serving. After retiring from the military he was associated with St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church of Cleveland in their maintenance department until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Arlene Newman Jones of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Rodney Davis of Athens and Tammy and Paul Matthews of Suffolk, VA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Jones and Beth Gumnick of Chattanooga and Johnny and Konnie Jones of Ooltewah; four granddaughters, Loni Harris and her husband Brady, Alexis Davis, Courtney Matthews, and Sarah Jones; two grandsons, Joshua Matthews, Jarron Jones; three brothers, Wallace Jones, David Jones and Harold Jones all of Cleveland and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted 7:00 pm, Sunday, June 18, 2017 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home. Interment will be Monday, June 19th in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full honors provided by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm at the funeral home on Sunday prior to the service.
