Obituary for Gerald William "Jerry" Carter Sr.

Gerald William (Jerry) Carter, Sr. Age 96, of the Cumberland Hills Community near
Englewood, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at his residence.

He was the son of the late Delbert William and Sophie Longsway Carter. He was also preceded in death by two sisters Vivian Adams and Mary Teatriel. A former
Resident of West Carthage, NY, moved to Anderson, S.C. where he started the House of
Trophys’ and later moved to Englewood starting the Trophy House in Athens before
retiring after 15 yrs. in business.

He was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Englewood and was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 25 yrs.of service and later served with the U.S. Naval Dept. in NATO Southern Europe-Naples, Italy. He was a Veteran of WWII , Korean, and Vietnam Wars.

He was a member of the Meridan Sun Lodge #50 F&AM (50 year member), Chattanooga Scottish Rite Consistory and the Alhambra Shrine Temple. The youngest official in Basketball and Football in the Border and Pacific East Conference and the South West Conference for 38 yrs. He officiated in High School , College and Pro Football. In Basketball he was an Official in High School and College, he also was an official in Hawaiian Conference. He Worked the Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Hula Bowl in SEC Basketball. He served as President of Athens Ruitan Club 4 times and served as Assistant Governor and Governor Of Cherokee Division of Cleveland, TN.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen Brown Carter of Englewood; three daughters, Patricia Bryant, Peggy Svelen, and Jeannie Johnson all of California; one son, Gerald Carter, Jr. of California; two grandsons, six granddaughters, two great-granddaughters; one sister, Corrine Panel of OR.; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece and her husband, Dr. & Mrs. Paul and Annette McCulley of Athens.

Funeral Service will be conducted, 2:00 pm, Saturday, July 1, 2017 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with the Minister Scott Lovingood officiating. There will be a Masonic service conducted at 12:30 pm by the Meridian Sun Lodge #50 F&AM.

Burial will follow in Upper Springs Creek Cemetery with full
military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 12:30-1:30pm prior to the service.
