Obituary for Eunice Buttram (Stanford)

Martha Eunice Stanford Buttram of Athens, Tennessee passed away after a brief illness Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the age of 92.

Born November 04, 1924, Eunice was a life-long resident of Athens, TN, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She was a 1942 graduate of McMinn County High School and attended Tennessee Wesleyan College. Her career included working for the Florida State Road Department, secretary/bookkeeper to the McMinn County - County Manager to acting County Manager and Finance Director, and from September 1970 to December 1989 she worked and retired as the Director of Finance for the City of Athens. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, always putting others before herself. Eunice enjoyed cooking, reading, volunteering, working puzzles, playing Scrabble, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Eunice was preceded in death by her husband James O. (Jim) Buttram a former Postmaster of the Athens Post Office, mother and father; Gracie Mae Vandegriff Stanford and Aaron Cleveland 'Pete' Stanford, brother Austin Clay Stanford of Minneapolis, MN, and a sister Bernice Stanford Wattenbarger of Athens.

She is survived by her daughter Janie B. Vaden of Tunnel Hill, GA, her son Jim Buttram II and his wife Susan of Lenoir City, TN, grandchildren; Jennifer V. Farner and husband Larry of Ringgold, GA Jillian V. Keener and husband Jeremy of Ringgold, GA, Matthew Buttram, and Nicholas Buttram of Lenoir City, TN, great-grandchildren: Jackson, Gage, Ava Grace, Brandilyn, Halle, and Sydney, and sisters Jo Stanford Kinzalow Zimmerman of Sweetwater, TN and June Stanford Prince of Winter Haven, FL.

Family and friends are invited to honor the life of Martha Eunice Stanford Buttram at a graveside service on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm, at the Athens Cedar Grove Cemetery with The Reverend Loren Boyce and family members officiating.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Matt and Nick Buttram, great-grandsons, Jackson Farner and Gage Keener, and grandsons-in-law Larry Farner and Jeremy Keener.
