Obituary for Mary Kate Bartlett (Williams)

Mary Kate Williams-Thompson-Bartlett, 91, a resident of Cleveland and formerly of Athens,TN was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on October 8, 2018. She was of the Christian faith, Southern Baptist denomination, and was a member of Christ Community Church in Athens. She was born in the beautiful small town of Bryson City, North Carolina, in the heart of the Smokey Mountains. She moved to work in Washington, D.C. at only 17 years of age; after later moving to Cleveland, she worked for Bowater Paper Company in Calhoun TN for 33 years. She loved her job and was the best Order Planner Bowater ever had.
Her favorite place to be in her youth was the library, where she read countless books. She retained her love of reading her entire life, teaching some of her children and grandchildren to read proficiently at a very early age. She also volunteered as a reading tutor in the McMinn County school system, instilling that same love of reading in many others.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Newell B. Thompson; second husband, Walter K. Bartlett; parents Claud Cordell and Lelia Lyon Williams; brothers Troy, Claude "Red", Jack, Bert and Bill Williams; sisters, Edna McNeil and Bernice Shimer; daughter Linda Marie Thompson; stepsons Buddy and Bob Bartlett.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Rebecca Stanfield of Cleveland, and Kathy and Dustin Whinery of Bradenton,FL; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Sylvia Thompson of Madison, TN; her grandchildren, Jennifer Cox, Angie Thompson, Caitlin Stanfield,Naomi Whinery, Drew Whinery, Erica Holston, Greg Bartlett, Mercedith Lewis, Katie Bartlett and Eddie Sturgeon; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Retired Air Force Maj. Joe "Bruce" Williams of Las Vegas, NV and Richard Williams of Mt. Airy, NC; and a group of beloved nieces and nephews.
At Mary Kate's request, there will be no formal services. Instead, her family asks that you celebrate her wonderful, well-lived life and remember the Bible verses: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus (Roman 8:38-39 NIV). Memorial gifts may be sent to Christ Community Church of Athens, 14 South Congress Pkwy., Athens, TN 37303; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or Marianna Black Library in Bryson City, NC.
