Obituary for Dr. Iris Snider-Slowey (Snider) MD

Dr. Iris Snider Slowey, MD, 74, of Athens, died early Friday morning, February 9, 2018 at her home.
She was born in Enid, Oklahoma and moved to Maryville at an early age and was a daughter of the late Raymond and Irene Snider.
She was also preceded in death by her husband Dr. James F. Slowey, III, MD on November 10, 2017 and two sons Jerry and James F. Slowey, IV.
She was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical School and completed residencies in pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis and the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital in Knoxville. She was board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has practiced medicine at Athens Pediatrics, PC, for more than 45 years.
She has been active in local, regional and statewide activities to improve health care delivery in Tennessee. Locally, she has served as ARMC chief of staff, as a member of the hospital's Executive Committee and as president of the McMinn County Medical Association. In 1993, she was named Business and Professional Woman of the Year at the annual Athens Area Chamber of Commerce banquet.
She received the Etteldorf Pediatric Alumni Award, the highest honor a UT-Memphis pediatric resident alumni can receive. She has accumulated a host of awards over the years, most as a result of the marriage between her goal of quality health care for all Tennessee's children and the politics necessary to achieve that goal.
In 1990, she became very active in the Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, including serving a term as chapter President. In 1999, she was elected vice chairperson of the Appalachian District of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
She was currently a pediatrician on the medical staff of Starr Regional Medical Center, where she had served on the board for many years.
She was a member of McMinn County Medical Society from 1975-present, she had served as Secretary, Vice-President, and President, 1979-81. TN Medical association, 1975-present. TN chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (TN Pediatric Society) 1975-present and the American Academy of Pediatrics, 1975-present.
Iris was a great lover of her many Dachshunds and peacocks.
She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Joe and Janice Slowey of Lenoir City and Jack Slowey and Ron Levy of San Francisco, CA; one granddaughter, Danielle Remmington of Lenoir City; one grandson, Chase Slowey of Lenoir City, student at Centre College in Danville, KY; one sister, Judge Janice Snider of Morristown; and a brother Alan Snider of Maryville.
A funeral service will be conducted 5:00 pm, Tuesday, February 13, 2018 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Dawson and Jennie Wells Breslin officiating. There will be a private interment for family only to follow the service. The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Honorary pallbearers will be Melanie Long, the Office Staff of Athens Pediatrics, Robin and Pat Bledsoe, Bobby and Vicki Haile, Louie and Linda Leroy, and James Leroy.
