Sandra "Sandy" Jane Borders Layman, age 60, passed away on Monday, July 15th, at her home in Athens, TN.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Richard Layman; son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Kelby Layman of Raleigh, North Carolina, son Ethan Layman of Knoxville, and daughter Katie Layman of Athens; parents Ralph and Shirley Borders of Athens; brother and sister-in-law Alan and Sheila Borders of Lenoir City; nephew and niece Robby and Lilly Borders; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles and Leona Layman and Thomas and Beth Layman all of Athens, Jane and Brett Ellison of Knoxville; and stepmother-in-law, Frances Layman of Sweetwater. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray and Sue Layman.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, she traveled with her parents as her father was in the Airforce. Growing up, she lived in Germany and various cities across the USA. After her father’s retirement, the family moved to Athens where she graduated from McMinn County High School. She received a B.S. in accounting from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and married her husband whom she met in high school the year before graduating.
Her first job out of college was a bookkeeper for Crescent Hosiery Mill in Niota, TN. She later opened Crafter’s Closet, an arts and craft store in Athens, with her sister-in-law, Leona Layman. She kept the books for the family’s farm and also milked cows and fed calves whenever needed.
While her children were in grammar school, she took a job as the art teacher of Niota Elementary School, where she shared her passion of the arts to hundreds of kids during her tenure. After her children were in high school, she remodeled and opened a wedding/event venue, The Browder House, in Sweetwater, TN with her good friend, Susan Peglow. She also began working as a bookkeeper for the The DPA until her brain tumor was discovered in April 2018.
She was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church of Athens and attended The Fellowship Church in Sweetwater.
The service will be conducted, 7:00 pm, Friday, July 19th in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Derek McCosh officiating. The committal service will be at 11:00 am, Saturday in Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 pm, Friday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Fellowship Church, 901 Monroe Street, Sweetwater, TN 37874; St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital-Tribute, P.O. Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142; or Art Programs at McMinn County Elementary Schools.

Sandy helped me get through my first two years at UT. She treated me like a little sister, and I was always grateful to have her as a friend. She had a beautiful, kind, and giving spirit, an infectious laugh, and such an open heart. You are in my thoughts and prayers, and I'm so sorry for your loss. Jyl Smithson

We have loved Sandy since she married Richard, who we have loved since his high school days. She was so good to lead crafts for Keith Memorial's Bible School. We saw the children grown-up when they were small. What a wonderful family. Our family will miss her. The Jack Underdown Family
