Obituary for Juanita Robinson (Newman)
Juanita Newman Robinson, of Athens, TN, died on January 24, 2020.
She was born in Cleveland, TN on April 10, 1924 to the late Raleigh D. and Carrie B. Newman. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Fred A. Robinson, her brother, Raleigh D. Newman, Jr., and her grandson, Colby MacKaye Robinson. She is survived by her son and two daughters: Dr. Don and Dawn Robinson of Cleveland, Susan and Joe Wilson of Athens, Carrie Robinson and David Franz of Chattanooga, and her "love-like-a-daughter", Debbie Martin of Etowah. Her grandchildren, who knew her as "Mama Nita", are Mandy and Jake Kilpatrick, J.B. Robinson, Chris and Jennifer Robinson, Carrie Frame Hughes and Jamie Hughes, and Matt and Addie Ann Tanzi. She is survived by 9 great-grandchildren.
She was a devoted wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Juanita has been an active member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church since September 28, 1947. She served for many years as coordinator of children's work, Sunday School teacher and Bible School teacher. She was active in U.M.W and received the Special Mission Award in 2001 and was a long-time member of Home Service Sunday School Class.
An active volunteer in her community, she served in many capacities in City Park and Athens Junior High School P.T.A. and room mothers, was a cub scout and girl scout leader, and served in McMinn County High School Band Boosters. She was a founder of the Home Garden Club in 1953, and was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization, Chapter AV (P.E.O Sisterhood). She served as a volunteer delivering Meals on Wheels for many years.
Throughout her life, Juanita loved sports of all types, both as a participant, as well as being an avid Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Vols fan. She was inducted into the Bradley County Old Timers' Club Sports Hall of Fame for softball in 1997. As a young woman in the early 1940's she played professional softball for Lawtex Corporation, placing second in the national championship in 1942. Her teammates knew her as "Sweet Pea". She played shortstop for the team. Juanita was an avid golfer at Springbrook Golf and Country Club for many years.
In addition to the combat service in World War II of her brother, cousins, and many close friends, Juanita served her country in a "Rosie the Riveter" capacity working in a munitions factory in Kingsport, TN making depth charges for the war effort.
The family especially wishes to express appreciation to all of the staff of Morning Pointe of Athens, NHC of Athens, Starr Regional Medical Center of Athens for their kindness and loving care.
A funeral service will be conducted, 1:30 pm, Monday, January 27, 2020 at Keith Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. David Graybeal and Rev. Andrew Lay officiating. Interment will be in the family plot at Calhoun Community Cemetery in Calhoun, TN, interment will be private for the family. The family will receive friends at the church Monday from 12:00-1:30 pm prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Jacob Kilpatrick, J.B. Robinson, Chris Robinson, Matt Tanzi, Carrie Frame Hughes, and Jamie Hughes. Honorary pallbearers will be Home Service Sunday School class and P.EO. Sisterhood AV Chapter.
