Betty Pickel Axley, 91, of Athens, died Monday night, February 10, 2020 at a nursing facility in Spring City.
She was a lifelong resident of McMinn County and was a daughter of the late Edward and Joyce Nichols Pickel. She was also preceded in death by her husband Lowell C. Axley, Sr., a sister Joyce Pennington, and two brothers Roy and Charles Pickel.
She was a loving mother and grandmother who stayed home to take care of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
Betty is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Gary Cantrell of Cleveland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Betty Axley, Lowell and Gail Axley, and Kenny and Ginger Axley all of Athens; one granddaughter, Barbara Amy; four grandsons, Ricky, Eric, Curtis, and Ben Axley; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson ; and one brother Bill Pickel of Greenville, SC.
A graveside service and interment will be conducted, 2:00pm, Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Mt. Harmony Cemetery with Rev. Stan Hammonds officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith Funeral Home Thursday from 11:30-1:30 pm prior to the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, and Jim King, Mike Pickel, and Jason Amy.
