Obituary

Elizabeth Ann (Libby) Johnson, Born December 1, 1929 in Athens, TN.
She was the daughter of the late Harry C,Sr and Chita Elizabeth Sugart Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Harry C. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Mary E. Johnson, and James Emmette Johnson.
She attended Forrest Hills Elementary, McMinn County High School where she was football queen, and graduated from Bob Jones University with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.
She taught in elementary schools in Chattanooga, TN, Athens, TN Ingleside School, and for the Department of Defense Schools overseas in Japan and Germany during the early years after her college graduation.
She went back to Japan in the 1970's to do missionary work teaching the Japanese English, as well as introducing her students to the Christian faith.
Returning home to Athens, she began teaching Bible classes in schools in McMinn, Meigs and Monroe County. A career that spanned over 50 years. She retired in 2018, but continued to attend those classes which had been taught as an after school club until 3 months before her death.
Libby was a person who lived her life as a committed Christian. She was a witness to her faith, sharing the Bible stories and lessons through her studies and teaching. She was always happiest in all aspects of her life in activities that shared her faith, whether at her church, 1st Baptist in Athens, her Bible classes and her work with the International club she initiated to welcome foreigners who moved in our community.
She is survived by her sister-i-law, Hazel Cannon Johnson and 5 nieces and 1 nephew, and all who knew and loved her from her lifetime of teaching.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Athens at a later date to be announced.
The family suggests memorials be made to Christ Legacy Academy, 625 S. Matlock Avenue, Athens, TN 37303; Tennessee Wesleyan University, 204 E. College Street, Athens, TN 37303; or a charity of the givers choice.

Libby was such an important person in my life, and the lives of so many others! She set the bar high for all of us, in that she was always thinking and doing for others first! A kind spirit, always joyful and a quiet demeanor - this is how I will always remember this saintly sister in Christ!

Rest well Miss Libby! You are home now with the Father! Love you and miss you!

Sad to hear of the passing of Miss Libby...but rejoicing about her home-going. She was a vital Christian influence on my spiritual upbringing. I remember her teaching Bible stories in school at Riceville Elementary school as well as at church, First Baptist. She was a sweet lady, but a fierce Christian soldier determined to bring glory to His name.

Just want to take this opportunity to express my words of condolences to all of the family during this time of sorrow. I have had the pleasure and honor of knowing the Johnson family most of my life, even spending a few years during my teen years working at the store. I can say with total confidence that Libby demonstrated a committed Christian life throughout the years of her life that i was privileged to know her. She will be greatly missed but you all know that she is at home with the family that has gone before as well as the multitude that she showed the way to salvation. I am sure that she was met by our Lord and welcomed with the words "Well done my good and faithful servant." Roberta ande I will be remembering you duriing this difficult time.

What a wonderful celebration there must have been in heaven when Mrs. Johnson entered those gates! If there was ever a soul deserving to hear "well done my good and faithful servant", it was this lady for sure. She is truly a legend in Athens and will be missed by all who knew her. I was one of her students for years, not only did I learn about the Bible, I learned Japanese, origami, and love of a lady for each and every person who crossed her path. My daughter was blessed in having her as her Bible teacher as well and loved her just the same. Mrs. Johnson changed many, many lives and lead so many to know salvation and the love of our Heavenly Father. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.
