Velma Charlotte Melton Smith, 92, of Athens, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2022 at Morning Pointe of Athens.
She was a lifelong resident of McMinn County and was the daughter of the late William Enos and Bertie Long Melton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, R. Cecil Smith; an infant son, Kent Smith; brothers, Jerry Melton and Clarence Melton; and step-mother, Irene C. Melton.
She was a member of Eastanallee Baptist Church where she was a member of the Joy Sunday School class. She was associated with AT&T, retiring after 32 years as an operator.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Mark Millican of Ellijay, GA, and Debbie and Michael Morecraft of Englewood; one granddaughter and her partner, Rebecca Hankins and Paul Vavonese of Va ; one grandson and his wife, Andrew and Elizabeth Smith of Rocky Face, Ga; one step- granddaughter, Amy and Devin Wright of Madison, Ala; ten great-grandchildren; one half brother, Bill Melton of St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Sunday, March 27, 2022 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Millican officiating. Interment will follow in Eastanallee Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30-2:00 at the funeral home prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Ruly Smith, Dillard Smith, Gary Smith, David Melton, Ricky Smith, Andrew Smith, and Eddie Smith.
The family wishes to give a thank you to a special nephew Ricky Smith who did so much for her.
