Obituary for James LaMar Dugan Sr.

James LaMar Dugan, Sr. passed away on Monday, March 28th, 2022. He was born June 25, 1940 in Chattanooga, TN. LaMar was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from UT Dental School in Memphis in 1966. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy and served in Vietnam. LaMar retired from the Navy Reserve in 1979. He opened his dental practice in Athens in 1968, practicing for over 50 years; with his son James LaMar Dugan II joining his practice in 2000.

LaMar was awarded the Fellowship of the Academy of General Dentistry and over the years was president of multiple dental study groups. He taught courses to dental laboratory technicians and was a delegate to the Tennessee Dental Association for eight years. Dr. Dugan served as Dental Forensic Examiner for McMinn County for many years and was also awarded the Colonel, Aide de Camp, Governers Staff for the State of Tennessee.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Linda Dugan; daughter, Sarah Jane and husband Matthew Gary Mason; son, James LaMar Dugan, II and wife Natalie Lee. Grandchildren, Riley Mason, Allie Mason Douglas and husband Jared Douglas, Maggie Dugan, Gracie Dugan and James LaMar Dugan, III. LaMar has one sister, Barbara Whittaker of Hermitage, TN and one brother, Robert Dugan and wife, Paulette of Harrison, TN

A graveside service will take place 12:30 pm on Wednesday, April 6th at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E. Gov. John Sevier Hwy 168, Knoxville, Tn 37920. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to his favorite charity St. Jude Children's Hospital www.stjude.org (800)805-5856.
