Obituary for Shirley Jean Borders (Davis)
Shirley Jean Davis Borders, 84, of Riceville, loving mother of 2 and grandmother to 5, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at her home.
She was born in Athens, TN along with her 6 siblings, to the late Virgil and Ruth Davis. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Stan and Jerry Davis, sister Aldene Brackett, and a daughter Sandy Layman.
She met and married Ralph Borders as pen pals in May of 1957. Ralph, through his service in the air force, brought Shirley to live in Arizona, Arkansas, Ohio, Colorado, California, Virginia, Germany and Florida.
Retired from Athens Products, Shirley devoted herself to loving and caring for her family.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years Ralph Borders; son and his wife, Alan and Sheila Borders; grandchildren, Matthew (Kelby) Layman, Ethan Layman, Katie Layman (Tanner Johnson), Robby Borders and Lilly Borders.
A graveside service will be conducted 1:30 pm, Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at McMinn Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Rev. Derek McCosh officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday at Smith Funeral Home from 11:30am-1:15pm prior to the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Ethan Layman, RIchard Layman, Tanner Johnson, Al Borders, Robert Borders, Jamie Davis, and Austin Davis.
The family suggest memorials be made to The United Way of McMinn County
