Obituary for Betty Jane Rowland (Slack)

Betty Jane Slack Rowland, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her loving heartbroken family Friday evening, October 28, 2022.
Born October 30, 1932 to Richard and Caroline (Callie) Slack on a farm in McMinn County, TN, she grew up learning to raise a garden, pick cotton, cook, sew, run the family grocery store including pumping gas, knit, crochet, embroider, take care the farm animals and care for others. As a teen she sang in a trio in church. Betty attended Mount Cumberland School and Englewood School. She was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church. She worked at Riddle and Wallace Drug Store, Love's Children's Shop, and was an excellent seamstress making clothes for her family and many others.
Betty married Glenn Rowland July 26, 1952 in Englewood, TN. They lived in Aiken, SC, Augusta, GA and Athens, TN before settling in the Wildwood Community between Athens and Englewood to live and raise 8 children. Betty and Glenn bought several horses which the kids showed for many years earning countless trophies and making many friends. Betty made the western clothes they wore in the shows.
Awaiting her heavenly celebration were her parents, husband Glenn Rowland, mother and father-in-law Beulah and Bronce Elkins, son Charles Roy Rowland, daughter Betty Marie Rowland, grandchildren Emalyne Belle Medders, Jason David Brantley, Stacie Nicole Brantley, sisters and brothers-in-law Nellie and Clyde Sneed, Ruth and Kyle McElhaney. Brothers and sisters-in-law Carson and Mary Slack, Ray and Barbara Slack, Paul and Anna Lou Slack, Troy Slack, and son-in-law Larry Ulery. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and spouses Sherman and Faudine Rowland, Austin and Pauline Rowland, Charles and May Rowland, Lockie and JD Baxter, Geraldine and Charles Burton, Hazel and Homer Rogers, Sue and JB Crabtree, Katherine and Cletus Elkins, Gene and Shelby Elkins, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Left to miss her and cherish her memory are son and daughter-in-law Frank and Lisa Rowland; daughters and sons-in-law Ann and Steve Chmielorz, Shamra and Greg Hayes, Carol and David Brantley, Glenda Rowland, Susan Wenzel and boyfriend Mike Ellis; grandchildren and spouses Cayla and Christian Medders, Joshua and Sarah Wenzel, Martin and Jodi Wenzel, Dustin and Chelsey Miller, Amanda and Joe Millsaps, Jeremy Rowland, Rick and Stacie Ulery, Corie and Bobby Gossett, Steven Chmielorz Jr, Andy Coleman and fiance Ron Day.
Great grandchildren and spouses Sarah Jayne and Eric Patterson, Tucker Medders, Kash Medders, Melody Miller, Madelyn Miller, Natalie Wenzel, Levi Wenzel, Kathryn and James Carroll, Suzanne Brewer, and Jackson Coleman. Sister-in-law Mary Lynn Slack, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Betty was very much loved by everyone and will be tremendously missed forever by many family and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted, 7:00 pm, Tuesday, November 1, 2022 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Vest officiating. The committal service will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, November 2, 2022 in Wildwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.
