Obituary for William Lewis "Bill" Snyder

William L. (Bill) Snyder passed away Friday, November 4, 2022 at his home in Niota, Tennessee.
Bill was born March 24, 1929, to Robert H. and Alpha Simpson Snyder in Niota. Bill was a graduate of McMinn County High School class of 1947 and attended Tennessee Wesleyan College. He proudly served as a member of the Tennessee National Guard, in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and the Army Reserve. In 1954 he began working at the Bowater Paper Mill until his retirement where he was employed for more than 30 years in the Sulphate Dept. Bill was an avid golfer. As a teen he caddied at Springbrook golf course and learned to play the game at a high level. Golfing continued to be his favorite pastime until recently. Bill was a skilled woodworker and spent many years creating items in his workshop. Bill also served his community in many ways with stints as a Niota City commissioner and as Mayor. Bill was an active member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Niota, TN where he was a member of the choir.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alpha Simpson Snyder; sisters, Jane Snyder Sewell and Sue Snyder Long; and his loving bride of 65 years Joy Marie Snyder.
He is survived by son William Briscoe (Trescha) Snyder of Knoxville TN; daughter Sandra Snyder Hunter of Thurmont, MD; son Alan Lewis (Audrey) Snyder of Cape Town, South Africa; grandson William Adam (Megan) Snyder of Knoxville, TN; granddaughters Katherine O'Neal Snyder and Alixander Dupuy Hunter (Alex) Bochel of Washington, D.C.; brother Joe (Boots) Snyder of Niota, TN; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted 1:30pm, Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Niota with Rev. Cullen Conner officiating. Interment will follow in Niota Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the McMinn County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 11:00am-1:30pm Wednesday at the church prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Adam Snyder, Al Sewell, Gregg Snyder, Tony Maney, and Steve Staley.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials contributions be made to First Baptist Church, 6 E. Main Street, Niota, TN 37826 or to a charity of your choice.
