Obituary for Kay Coker (Frizzell)

Shirrell Kay Coker, 85, of Athens, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 29.
Born in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, she attended Campbellsville University where she met the love of her life, Bill Coker. Together they settled in Athens, Tennessee where they raised their three children.
Kay earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee. She was a former third grade teacher at Englewood Elementary School, and an active Sunday School teacher at East Athens Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing soprano in her church choir. A dedicated community member, Kay gave back through her service in the Athens Pilot Club, serving several terms as president. She was also a member of the McMinn County Republican Women, once serving as chaplain.
She is preceded in death by parents Lee and Hallie Frizzell, loving husband Bill Coker, and brother Harold Frizzell.
She is survived by children John Coker (Beth), Jenny Parsons (David), Jody Montieth (Shawn), nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sisters Wanda Frizzell and Pam Reeves (John), and brothers Jim Frizzell (Gloria) and Roger Frizzell.
Visitation will be held at East Athens Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 4, from 4 – 5:45 p.m. A celebration of life service will begin at 6 p.m.
The family graveside service will be held at McMinn Memory Gardens on Thursday, January 5 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the East Athens Baptist Church music department: 301 Central Ave., Athens, TN, 37303.
