Obituary for Joseph Clure "Joe" Nelson

Joseph C. (Joe) Nelson, 86, of Cumberland Hills community near Englewood, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023 at Starr Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Sweetwater and longtime resident of McMinn County, He was preceded in death by his mother Fay Stapp and father Joseph A. Nelson.
He was a member of East Athens Baptist Church, where he sang in the church choir for many years. He also sang in their men's quartet, Brothers in Song. His beautiful tenor voice touched all who heard it. It was his joy to use his amazing talent to serve the Lord. He also served on the finance committee for several years.
He was a 1954 Graduate of West High School, and attended Knoxville Business College and the University of Tennessee and was a huge fan of the Vols. He served the community in banking, retiring from Athens Federal in 2000 as Vice President of Lending.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jaynell Settlemire Nelson of Englewood; daughters, Donna Creasman of Riceville and Sherri Kennedy (James) of Athens; and his granddaughter, Reily Kennedy of Lenoir City; and a brother, Rodney Nelson (Carolyn) of Robbinsville, NC.
A funeral service will be conducted, 7:00 pm, Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at East Athens Baptist Church with Dr. Brian Trapp and Rev. Mike Dannel officiating. The committal service will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at McMinn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Darren RIcks, James Kennedy, Barry Toomey, Rodney Ammons, Rodney Scarbrough, Jeff McCay, and Larry Toomey.
