Obituary for Sharon Ann Davis (Bishop)

Sharon Ann Bishop Davis passed away on May 1, 2023, at the age of 72, after battling ALS. She was the daughter of the late Howard A. and Neva Hunt Bishop of the Benton Station Community in Polk County and was a resident of Athens, Tennessee. Her parents’ love and encouragement, especially her mother’s, helped her succeed.

Sharon graduated with honors from Polk County High School, Tennessee Technological University (BS), and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (MS). She had a great principal and many wonderful teachers and professors that helped her reach her goals.

Sharon taught sixth grade English for most of her 45 years at Englewood Elementary School and was known for her grammar songs and chants and formula poems with multi-media art illustrations. She received Teacher of the Year awards from McMinn County and Murray County, Georgia. She learned so much about teaching and friendship from her teammates Pansy Corvin, John Studdard, and Jennifer Warnack.

Sharon was a member of Mt. Harmon Methodist and Keith Memorial United Methodist churches. As a young adult, she was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, nursery worker, served on the Alter Guild, and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Dr. Dan Kelly was her favorite minister. God was always by her side.

Sharon was the loving wife of Robert A. Davis, III, for 41 years and greatly appreciates his taking such good, loving care of her; the grateful mother of Jenny Lynn (Dallas) Dover and Robert A. Davis, IV; the proud grandmother of Andrew Thomas Dover, Zachary Anson Dover, Robert “Asa” Davis, V, and Troy Lee Davis; the loving sister of Jane (Herbert) Beene, Brenda (Charles) Hysinger, and Gary (Tennie) Bishop; thankful sister-in-law of Jac E. Davis and the late James O. Davis; the lucky aunt of Diane Tyner, Patricia (John) Bland, Jill West, Jay (Tiffany) Hysinger, Kristen (Corey) Houser, Brandon (Mara) Bishop, Ethan (Marion) Davis, and Emily Davis; the great-aunt of Jake Houser, Abby Houser, Reed Bishop, Evva Bishop, and Jayden Hysinger; and the honored friend of Stephanie Wilson and the hospice team, Marian and John Hale, Peggy Dover, Libby Skorupan, Chris and Trinity Ashworth, Keith Bester, Mildred Prince, Judi Davis, Anne Catron, Pat Chester, Debbie Hamilton, Ginger Robinson, Mary Younger, and many other wonderful members of Keith Church.

Sharon requested a private family graveside funeral with Reverend Melissa Smith officiating. Instead of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1, Athens, TN, 47471-0001.
Sharon wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Smith Funeral and Cremation Services of Athens is honored to serve the family of Sharon Ann Bishop Davis.
