Obituary for Hazel Louise Lowry (Mason)

On Sunday, May 7th, the Lord called Hazel Louise Mason Lowry home. She was a lifelong resident of Niota. Hazel graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College with a degree in elementary education. She taught for 33 years in the McMinn County School System, most of those years were spent teaching 7th and 8th grade English at Niota Elementary School.
Hazel was a lifelong member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church of Niota. She served the Lord in various ways, including many years as the church pianist. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, F.A. Lowry Jr. Together they raised 5 children, and instilled in them love and faith in God and the importance of family.
Hazel enjoyed gardening and being outdoors, spending many hours in her vegetable and flower gardens. Her true joy, however, came from spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Richard (Becki) Lowry, Mike (Tammie) Lowry, Cathy (Tom) Castor, Susan (Wayne) Bryant, and Mark (Kyla) Lowry; her eleven grandchildren, Andy (Annette) Bryant, Jennifer (Brody) Reid, Beth (Ryne) Frazier, Debbie (Jeremy) Crews, Michelle (Ryan) Hash, Loren (Seth) Reagan, Amy Jo (Johnny) Billings, James (Marissa) Lowry, CJ (Dylan) Coleman, Kayla Lowry, and Brianna (Jake) Utne, as well as her 27 great-grandchildren, Addison, Browder, Rossie, Baxter, Haven, Brenna, Reese, Drake, Nash, Truett, Valli, Cooper, Deacon, SJ, Max, Brooks, Ava, Coen, Statler, Silas, Myla Jo, Wells, Porter, Stella, Duke, Remi, and Lane.
In 2015, Hazel was honored and surprised to learn she was the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce Mother of the Year; however, it was no surprise to her family because to them she had always been Mother of the Year. Hazel was loved by many and will be missed by all that were blessed to know her.
A funeral service will be conducted, 11:00am, Friday, May 12, 2023 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Niota with Rev. Stanley Hammonds officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 10:00-11:00 am prior to the service. Interment will follow in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.
