Obituary for Vernon Owen Carroll

Vernon Owen Carroll, 90, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of McMinn County and was a son of the late Walter Lewis and Beatrice Wattenbarger Carroll. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Eula Keaton, Zelda Hyde, Toni Richardson, and Catherene Lunsford and an infant sister Mildred Carroll, and a brother, Lewis (Sonny) Carroll.
He was a very kind and gentle man, wonderful husband and father. He enjoyed volunteering at the McMinn County Rescue Squad in the 70's for over 10 years, tinkering with anything that could be tinkered with and he did enjoy his ice cream.
He was associated with the Beaunit Corporation, Fisher Hosiery Mill, Athens Hosiery Mill, Niota Textile Knitting Mill and Tennessee Hosiery Mill as a knitting machine technician until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nellie Johnson Carroll; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mona and Rick Crabtree and Julie and Pat Lee; grandson, Thomas Lee; and great-grandson, Burgess Lee.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024 at McMinn Memory Gardens with Rev. John Porter officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith Funeral Home from 12:30-1:45 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024 prior to the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Lee, Patrick Lee, Rick Crabtree, Heath Webb, and Dale Lunsford.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Johnnie Carter and his office staff, and Hospice of Chattanooga for their care of Vernon.
